VOL. 19 NUM. 6

Rafting Down The Arkansas River. Scouts and adults took on the Arkansas River in Bighorn Canyon on a much warmer and nicer day than the last white water trip at Salida (which still exists in living memory) Carl Johnson thought it nice to swim once or twice. JS couldn’t figure out how to start the bus (put it in neutral Mr. Bus Driver). Of course the rest of us proceeded to dismantle the battery rack. Skip is still trying to put it all back together. Jim Gwinn did a great job on arrangements at the high school in Pueblo. DM is still mad we did not go to McDonald’s on Sunday morning (remember: Life is hard and then you.....)

The Wichita win game night, continuing their recent domination of the one night competitions. Apache were second and the Comanche came in third.

***NEW EAGLE***

Brantley Jones has now completed requirements for Eagle, after redoing all his lost paperwork. Congratulations to his long suffering parents!

****SIGN DONATED****

Jim and Cindy Thompson have donated a lighted outdoor sign with movable letters which is now on the west side of the building. This is a great addition to the scout center and should help get information to our parents. John Standish helped with the wiring, and Skip, the Finleys and others helped put the sign up. Thanks fro Troop 80.

***LOST NOT FOUND***

1) Jim Gwinn’s camera last seen on the float trip. If you’ve seen it, let him know.. 2) Several (as in 8) Igloo 5 gallon coolers. 3) Pipe Driver (used on the tree lot) is again missing. Last seen about 3 weeks ago in the main equipment shed. We are also missing the other one, but that one disappeared over a year ago. If you borrowed it, please return it.

^^United Way changed its forms last year to make it much harder to select a designated charity. Eighty Scouts Inc. (sponsor of Troop 80 ), is registered with the IRS and qualifies for designated funds from United Way. We now have the official forms to use to designate Eighty Scouts Inc. Please pick up these forms from the building on any Tuesday night. This change has cost us about $5000 in lost donations. Thanks for your support.

TEXAS MOTOR SPEEDWAY

Success to all involved in the Texas Motor Speedway Fund Raising/Camping Weekend. The total sales for the two day event topped $13,000.00 in concession sales. Our profit will be %10 of that total.

The sovereign hood was given to the young men in the pits by a driver who wrecked on an early Saturday race. The next race we go to, we will see about getting a couple tires. One of the young men attending the event asked two things of Mr. Gwinn. “When can we come back and do this again, and how much did we raise?! This was a great campout and we came home with a profit. Thanks Mr. Gwinn.” Thanks to all who participated, for their hard work and dedication.

****HIKING MERIT BADGE*****

Rodney Carnes and John Cooksey are putting together a class for the Hiking Merit Badge, which is Eagle required. The hikes will be on the Rails to Trails State Park down near Camp Haynes (where we rappel). Talk to them if you are interested. The merit badge requires 5 10 mile hikes and a 20 mile hike, so it is not an easy badge to earn.

COMMENT ON DUTY

A sever storm hit the East Coast, and the Coast Guard was summoned to respond to a ship in crisis. A young sailor, new on board, was terrorized by the prospect and proclaimed, “We can’t go out. We’ll never come back!” The seasoned captained responded, “We must go out. We don’t have to come back.” Duty called and responsibility overcame fear.

A scout pledges on his honor to do his duty.
