Vol. 18 Num. 9

GILVIN RANCH SAGA

Some brave souls came down the weeds and swamps of South Ceta Canyon, with only one minor injury to BT (something about a shoulder separation). Flip and Dave ran the rapelling hill and everyone went over the edge safely. Those hiking in on short route only had to back track a few times. RTA and various relatives (we have to talk about this) and other unsundry souls came in and ate steak in front of the rest of us. Pack 3 came in for a while and enjoyed the rugged scenery. The hike out was not too bad, considering we had to climb up over 600 feet to the bus. Ice cold cokes did make it all right though. A flat tire on the bus slowed us up a bit, but HS knew how to make the bus air itself up, so we kept on rolling. The Z man tore up his finger and had to have surgery. Some people will do anything to get attention!

WANTED: Merit Badge Counselors. We need moms and dads to sign up in counselor positions. 119 merit badges. This will help the scouts. (You may not counsel your own son).

NEEDED: Merit Badge Books. If you have old merit badge books lying around, please donate Them to the Troop library. The Troop does not normally provide or purchase merit badge books, but relies on donations to make books available for scouts. If the Troop does not have a current book, the scout is expected to go to the scout office on Tascosa Road and buy his own merit badge book.

OLD UNIFORMS. If you have outgrown uniforms, hats, black sweatshirts, or unused camping equipment, please donate it to the Troop equipment and uniform closet, for use by other scouts. If you wish, we will give you a receipt for tax deduction purposes.

FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY POLICY (quoted in full). Any scout or adult owing money to Troop 80 (or a patrol leader) for a camp out, hat, shirt, or other similar reason may not attend any more camps, including Advancement Camp and Wilderness Camp, until the money is paid in full. If a scout or adult commits to go to a camp, the Troop or a patrol spends money on that commitment, purchasing food and other items. It is not fair for the Troop or patrol to have to bear that person’s expense. Also, a scout must not owe any money before he may take a board of review, or receive any advancement.

ALUMNI NEWS. John Blakely, former assistant scoutmaster, and dad of Andy Blakely, Eagle Scout, is running for political office. Apparently the committee meetings got him ready for the rough and tumble world of politics. Dr. Terry Howell, Jr., Eagle Scout, now works for the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

CONGRATULATIONS to MVC, Inc. Mark and Jeanette Wingate (parents of Matt Wingate, First Class Scout and Chris Wingate, Eagle Scout alumnus) operate MVC, Inc., which was recently recognized as top small business of Amarillo for 2001 by the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce.
