NEW EAGLES
Luke Austin and Chris Altsman earned the right to wear the Eagle by passing their Boards of Review. That makes 4 for the Court of Honor. We hope to see a bunch more before the new requirements take effect.
PHILMONT
Cost is $17 each. September 11-13. Steak dinner, trading post, great time. Get ready now, so you won’t win the dreaded pink ribbons.
TREE LOT
Tree Lot is here (almost). Need daytime workers for both lots (paid position). Set up November 14. Unload trees November 20-22. Lot 1 opens November 23. Lot 2 opens November 30.
The “Top” salesman gets a full ride in ‘99 to the Council’s Advancement camp, worth $110. The second place salesman gets a free trip to Wilderness camp, worth $65. The third place scout gets insulated booties to wear at snow camp.
MUSEUM
New at the Museum. The mannequin has been reclothed in a vintage scout uniform. Come by and see how the old uniforms use to look like.
TRADING POST
Water bottles are a hot item. $2 each. Lots of Webelos had them on the last camp. We still have grey shirts and black sweatshirts.
TROOP 80 ONLINE
Matt Hite has built a web site for Troop 80. Address is (call him). Dustin Mitchell will be Troop scribe in charge of maintaining the web site. If you have ideas, E-mail them to Matt Hite at exodus@arn.net.

WELCOME BACK
Former Troop 80 scouter Ken Watson has returned to Troop 80 as a member of the committee. His brother is David Watson, who works with A Squad. His son is Kyle Watson, who is finishing up his Eagle.
KITCHEN IS GONE
The remodeled kitchen will be dedicated at the September Court of Honor in honor of K. Bert Watson. The room will now be used for scout training, as well as storage for food and the 80's Ladies. Funds for the remodel were donated by the sons of K. Bert Watson, all of whom were in Troop 80 (Randy, Ken, Delk, David).
ORDER OF THE ARROW
Chris Coppedge successfully completed his Order of the Arrow “Ordeal” at camp MK Brown. He was the only scout from Troop 80 to accomplish the feat this year. After completing the task, he still made it to Don for the August Camp out. Our own, Terry Slade was the head cook for the OA event.
AUGUST CAMP OUT
A few hardy souls braved the heat to swim, canoe, and shoot at camp Don. Due to the efforts of Randy Reed, about 50 Webelos and parents visited the troop and got to taste some down home burgers cooked by Michael Kiefer himself (senior that is). Custom omelets were great as usual. Most improved shooter was Aaron Amos. Steve Tunnell and Randy Reed had a blast (pun intended ) running the shooting ranges. No one drowned or fell off the climbing tower, so it was a good camp.

EAGLE REQUIREMENTS
As many of you know, there will be numerous advancement changes effective January 1st 1999, including major changes to most of the ranks and the Eagle Required Merit Badge changes. A three month grace period was added to let scouts finish under the old requirements, which ends April 1st 1999.
I have been told that, now that the "All Hands" meeting of Scout Professionals is over, the changes that were discussed at Philmont this past summer can now be made public to all Scouts. Announcements will be in the next issues of Boy's Life and Scouting.
Some of the changes are to the Eagle required merit badges. Sports and Safety are out as required while Hiking and Cycling have been added to the Swimming as optional required. Personal Fitness will now be required all by itself.
If you are a Life scout now, you need to get to work and finish under the old requirements. Star scouts and newer will need to purchase a new book after they come out.

SEPTEMBER RECIPE
COURT OF HONOR
For some time I have had a person provide me with a rose boutonniere to pin on the lapel of my suit every Sunday. Because I always got a flower on Sunday morning, I really did not think much of it. It was a nice gesture that I appreciated but it became routine. One Sunday, however, what I considered ordinary became very special.
As I was leaving the Sunday service a young man approached me. He walked right up to me and said, "Sir, what are you going to do with your flower?" At first I did not know what he was talking about, but then I understood. I said, "Do you mean this?" as I pointed to the rose pinned to my coat.
He said, "Yes sir. I would like it if you are just going to throw it away." At this point I smiled and gladly told him that he could have my flower, casually asking him what he was going to do with it. The little boy, who was probably less than 10 years old, looked up at me and said, "Sir, I'm going to give it to my grandmother. My mother and father got divorced when I was young. I was living with my mother, but when she married again, she wanted me to go live with my father. I lived with him for a while, but he said I could not stay, so he sent me to live with my grandmother. She is so good to me. She cooks for me and takes care of me. She has been so good to me that I want to give that pretty flower to her for loving me."
When the little boy finished I could hardly speak. My eyes filled with tears and I knew I had been touched in the depths of my soul. I reached up and unpinned my flower. With the flower in my hand, I looked at the boy and said, "Son, that is the nicest thing I have ever heard, but you can't have this flower because it's not enough. If you'll look in front of the pulpit, you'll see a big bouquet of flowers. Different families buy them for the church each week. Please take those flowers to your grandmother because she deserves the very best."
If I hadn't been touched enough already, he made one last statement and I will always cherish it. He said, "What a wonderful day! I asked for one flower but I got a beautiful bouquet.
